Losing Legends: A Look Back At Lives Lost in 2016

6. Muhammad Ali

A World Heavyweight Boxing champion three times over, Muhammad proclaimed himself to be “the world’s greatest.”  His trip to the top wasn’t without controversy.  Ali refused the Vietnam draft for religious reasons and left the country for many years. Despite this setback, he won several bouts, including an infamous fight with George Foreman in 1974 which inspired Ali’s much cited quote, ““Floats like a butterfly, sting like a bee, his hands can’t hit what his eyes can’t see.” Known for his charming and witty personality, Ali took his 1984 Parkinson’s diagnosis with a grain of salt joking, “I always liked to chase the girls. Parkinson’s stops all that. Now I might have a chance to go to heaven.”
